Measuring Your Tread Depth

Can't tell if your tire tread is worn out? Use the penny test! Place a penny upside down, with Lincoln headfirst. Examine the part of the penny that is showing. If you can the entirety of Lincoln's head and hair, this means your tread is less than 2/32nd of an inch, and your tire needs to be replaced. If some of Lincoln's head is obstructed, your tires are most likely fine. Repeat this test in multiple grooves of your tire. For reference, new tires typically come with 10/32” or 11/32” tread depth.

Proper Tire Rotation

Regular tire rotation is important if you want to extend the life of your tires. If you were to never rotate your tires, your tires would have a lot more wear than your back tires. Typically, your front tires carry more than 60% of the vehicle’s weight, and will show even more wear from left turns. Proper tires rotation equalizes the tread wear amongst all tires, making for a longer and healthier tire life.

Importance of Maintaing Healthy Tire Pressure

Keeping proper air pressure in your tires is essential in making sure that your tires last longer, as well helps your car handle better and safer. To find the recommended tire pressure for your car, you can typically find the ideal tire pressure on a little placard that is inside the driver’s door. If there is no placard, you can always find the recommended pressure in your owner’s manual. If your TPMS warning light (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) lights up on your dashboard, this means that at least one of your tires is under-inflated by 25% or more.

Both under inflation and over inflation of your tires can negatively affect your tire’s performance. Under inflated tires can lead to blow outs due to the sidewalls of the tire bulging outward, as well a decrease in fuel economy due to a greater rolling resistance requiring the engine to do more work. The over inflation of tires can cause the tires to wear out prematurely as well as creates a loss of traction and harsher ride.
